Roy Keane questions Cristiano Ronaldo's Manchester derby injury with "doesn't add up" claim

Roy Keane questioned the injury that kept Cristiano Ronaldo out of the Manchester derby, insisting something "doesn't add up" after Ralf Rangnick's comments on the absent Manchester United superstar.

The Portugal star was omitted from the matchday squad that travelled to the Etihad to face Manchester City on Sunday.

Rangnick provided an update on Ronaldo's condition before kick-off revealing he had problems with his hip flexor on Friday and wasn't able to train.

He said: "Cristiano had some problems with his hip flexor on Friday and since then, he didn’t train."

Ronaldo couldn't recover in time for derby day, as a result, as Anthony Elanga came into the side to face Pep Guardiola's men.

But former United midfielder Keane isn't convinced about Ronaldo's injury given his renowned longevity

He told Sky Sports: "The surprise is Ronaldo with the problem with his hip flexor, but United have a bit of pace they still have to come out and play with pride and quality.

"Elanga is a good player, positive and is an intelligent player.

"There seems to be something more with the Ronaldo situation, the manager coming out talking about something about his hip flexor but the man is a machine and is rarely injured, but every now and again he comes out with that about his hip flexor, doesn’t add up to me."

Veteran striker Edinson Cavani was also ruled out of the game despite training the last three days.

Rangnick added: "Edi trained well in the last three days but, in the end, he didn’t feel quite well enough to be able to play. "

Raphael Varane and Luke Shaw were missing too as the pair tested positive with COVID during the week.

Marcus Rashford, the only other recognised number nine at the club, was left on the bench, however, as Rangnick went for Elanga and Jadon Sancho out wide - with Bruno Fernandes operating as a 'false nine.'

And Keane reckons it's a set up that can cause damage to City if United use it correctly.

He added: "I expect them to go wide and offer some pace, Fernandes will drop in, take his time and pick out the runners."
