Roy Keane has admitted that he has no idea who Manchester United should hire in the summer.
Ralf Rangnick is currently in the job but only until the end of the season, when his interim status will finish, but he has insisted he knows who he wants to replace him.
It comes amid a brewing storm at Old Trafford after United were thrashed by local rivals Manchester City at the Etihad on Sunday.
Pep Guardiola’s men made light work of the Red Devils after Kevin De Bruyne and Riyad Mahrez both scored braces in a 4-1 win.
Jadon Sancho had momentarily brought United level with a brilliant goal in the first-half but that was about as good as it got for the visitors.
City seemed to ramp up their play that Rangnick’s side could not live with, lending to a dominant display.
Much of the attention at Old Trafford appears to have turned to who will take over in the summer with Mauricio Pochettino and Erik ten Hag in the frame.
But United legend Keane is stumped for answers as to who comes in to replace Rangnick, who will move into a consultancy role when his short manager spell is over at the club.
Prior to the match on Sunday, the Irishman said on Sky Sports: “Huge decision for United over the next few months. They have got to get it right.
“They have got to get in the right manager to come into the club. They have chopped and changed.
“Recruitment obviously has not been good enough. There have been problems all over. At board level there has been change. A new chief executive coming in.
“The next manager, they have got to get that right. It is a huge decision in Manchester United’s history. If they don’t get it right, they are so far behind.
“We know they are far behind Liverpool anyway, and obviously Manchester City and Chelsea, they have to get it right. Who that man is, I don’t know.”
While several coaches have been linked with a move to United, Keane appeared to quash Rangnick’s stance on who comes in.
Ajax boss Ten Hag has been heavily tipped to take over and has even been reportedly learning English to stand a better chance of receiving an offer.
And Rangnick was asked about the Dutchman, who has been impressing with his style of football in the Eredivisie.
He told Sky Sports: "So far we haven't at all spoken about that, nobody, not just [United football director] John Murtough but nobody else, we haven't had that topic in the last weeks and months since I'm here.
"I know my opinion [of who should take the job] but so far we haven't spoken about it so this is what I can tell you.
"I don't know him, to start with, as a person. Obviously, I see the development at Ajax since he's been there, I know a little bit about his work when he was with Bayern Munich and that he is one of the top coaches in Europe that's obvious but there are a few other top coaches.
"As I said, we haven't spoken about any new manager so far, therefore we also didn't speak about him."
