Roy Keane proven right on Harry Kane after England captain opens World Cup account vs Senegal

Former Manchester United midfielder and pundit Roy Keane predicted that Harry Kane would score for England ahead of their clash against Senegal. It came as the Tottenham striker failed to find the back of the net in the tournament up until that point, despite winning the previous Golden Boot.

While that is always a point of contention, the forward has always been somewhat of a hybrid for the Three Lions, finding the goals when it matters, but often dropping deep to help in build-up. This was on display in the first half against Senegal, where he vacated space to allow Jordan Henderson to break into the box to find the opener.

Kane has been critical of his own performances, but believes the goals will be flowing: "When you go away and dissect it, for sure I’m my own biggest critic and I know when I can do better,” he told reporters ahead of the clash with Senegal.

While questions continued to swirl, Keane made the claim that he will inevitably find the back of the net before the clash. This proved to be the case as he got on the end of a cross to double England's lead and give them a cushion to setup a potential clash with France in the quarter-finals.

Keane said on ITV: "He’s contributing but he’ll be frustrated. I think that’s a bad run for Senegal to look at because he is going to score whether it’s tonight or next week. As night follows day, your goalscorer is determined to score and don’t be surprised if he does tonight."

Gary Neville then added: "He’s got the experience, he’s obviously got the right mentality, he’s a brilliant goalscorer. It’s not quite happened for him so far in this tournament but over the last couple of years, his hold-up play, link-up play has come on leaps and bounds so he is contributing."

England will be hoping he can continue that form if their captain is to lead them all the way to another major tournament final in the coming weeks.
