Roy Keane offers 'clever' verdict on Jack Grealish amid Man City penalty confusion

Roy Keane praised Jack Grealish for his role in the penalty which was scored by Riyad Mahrez to send Manchester City into half-time 3-0 up against Aston Villa.

The City winger was fouled by Jacob Ramsey to earn a penalty against his former team, with City already 2-0 up after goals from Ilkay Gundogan and Rodri. The penalty was well dispatched by Mahrez to hand City a comfortable half-time lead and enable Pep Guardiola to bring off Erling Haaland at half-time with the game looking won.

Keane and Grealish worked together at Villa when the £100 million man was breaking through and the foul to give City the penalty was well won. This drew praise from Keane on Sky Sports' coverage of the match, with the foul being discussed at half-time with Micah Richards.

Keane said: "Yeah, you have to give a penalty, it’s just Jack being very smart, very naive defending from Ramsey, he does kind of catch him but Jack kind of kicks himself more than anything else.

"We’re saying Jack is more like Tom Daley, but I think it is a penalty, and it’s clever from Jack. He gets his body across and like Gary said in commentary, he knows exactly what he’s doing, gave the referee almost no option but to give the penalty."

There was some confusion before the penalty was taken, however, with an argument over who would take the penalty, with Rodri having to be taken away by captain Ilkay Gundogan. Mahrez buried the penalty to justify the decision but Keane continued by expressing his view over the confusion.

He continued: "I know we’ve seen this with City before, I don’t like to see it, but Gundogan is obviously captain, comes in and gets involved. There’s some sort of discussion, of course I’ve said we’ve seen this before with City, but the most important thing is they scored the penalty - 3-0, game over."
