Roy Keane left with egg on face after Angel Di Maria comments come back to haunt him

Roy Keane has been left with egg on his face as his comments on Angel Di Maria in the early stages of the 2022 FIFA World Cup have come back to haunt him.

It's easy to forget now, but Argentina's loss to Saudi Arabia in their opening group game had many writing off the South American side as contenders. The performance was dreadful, and after the game, Keane took aim at Di Maria.

"There's no aggression, there are bodies there, you've got to go attack there, they've lost all composure. They've lost their heads, look at Di Maria… Di Maria, my god!" said Keane after the Saudi Arabia loss.

In the next game, Argentina played Mexico with the game tied at 0-0 as the referee blew the whistle for half time. At the break, both Keane and Gary Neville once again tore into the Manchester United flop.

It was Neville who went in hardest on Di Maria saying, "He is the biggest disappointment ever at Man United, him, he has no heart."

Unsurprisingly, Keane was equally as scathing, "I'm not sure he has one [heart]. He'll break your heart. He gets everyone up wanting him to do something and he is guaranteed to give it away.

"He goes into bodies and he doesn't get his head up. He's had a great career, some great moves and has gone for a lot of money but watching him out there, I'd take him off... although you can guarantee he'll score now. His product and decision-making for an experienced player is so poor."

Both Neville and Keane probably felt they had gotten away with their Di Maria comments. However, the Juventus star played the game of his life on Sunday, scoring a goal and winning a penalty as La Albiceleste won the World Cup for the first time since 1986.
