Roy Keane lays into Nottingham Forest after Man United cup loss

Roy Keane believes that Nottingham Forest's defeat to Manchester United in the EFL Cup semi-finals was "self-inflicted".

The Reds lost the first leg 3-0 at the City Ground before losing 2-0 at Old Trafford to deny them a second Wembley appearance in less than a year. Anthony Martial and Fred scored in quick succession in the second-half to put the game to bed.

Keane, who lined out for both clubs during a glittering Premier League career, criticised Forest's defending for both goals and says they made it far too easy for Man United over the two legs.

"Forest were always up against it but they still gave away really bad goals. Self-inflicted over the two legs when you look at it," Keane told Sky Sports after the final whistle.

"It was going to be tough against Manchester United anyway but to give them some of the goals again tonight, poor defending, not smelling danger, giving the ball away. Again, it was self-inflicted.

"They never quite recovered from [Rashford’s opener in the first leg] and United, considering it’s the cup semi-final over two legs, I bet United can’t believe how comfortable it was. Forest, yes they’re lacking a bit of confidence, but we didn’t see any belief tonight.

They’re in the same league and it’s as if they didn’t ever believe they could get a result or even a goal tonight. They had one or two chances, but United’s quality and class told in the end."
