Roy Keane jokes about why he quit Instagram as over two million followers left gutted

Roy Keane has explained why he quit Instagram.

The legendary footballer was notoriously against any form of social media throughout his playing days and in the years since he has retired.

That made it all the more surprising when he popped up on Instagram at the beginning of last year.

The former Manchester United and Ireland captain entertained over two million followers with posts about crisps, his wife and how he was once thrown out of a pub for fighting with a team mate.

But back in May, people noticed he had departed the platform - and while speaking to Off The Ball on Newstalk, he explained the situation.

He told host Joe Molloy: "I'm sure people will get over it and survive! I've said it before, I done it for a bit of fun. With Covid, my youngest daughter was insistent I did it for a bit of fun.

"But it's moved on now, a bit of closure on it."

Roy has been off our screens for a couple of months with the break in the Premier League, though did pop up at a couple of GAA games and other events - including cheering his native Cork against Dublin in Croke Park, where he was picked up by cameras and jokingly booed by the Dublin crowd..

He revealed why he loves coming back to his homeland, telling OTB Sports: "I'd be home every three weeks for a few days. There's always reasons to get back, I'm lucky with the work I do, I have that bit of freedom. I can go back to Ireland when I please.

"It's funny, when I go back to Cork say 'you better get back to England'! Sometimes I have to get back home more regularly than others, I'm very lucky. I can jump on a flight or jump on the boat, which I really enjoy.

"It's relaxing, you get a bit of time to yourself and certain days there'd be a sporting event on the boat. I've always liked driving, you have that freedom - sometimes you have to queue through airports and they're intense, whereas on the boat it's more relaxing."
