Roy Keane gets Sunderland red carpet treatment as Aiden McGeady relishes potential Celtic reunion

Aiden McGeady reckons Roy Keane would give Sunderland a much needed lift if he takes over as manager.

And he's hoping reports linking him with the job are on the money as he rubs his hands at a potential Celtic reunion on Tyneside.

The Black Cats are on the lookout for a new boss after Lee Johnson was dismissed following a 6-0 thumping against Bolton.

They've wasted no time in hunting for his replacement and various reports say Manchester United hero Keane is among the frontrunners set to be interviewed.

McGeady played with Keane in his sole season at Parkhead as the two won the league title together in 2006.

And the Irish winger, who hasn't played for the League One promotion chasers since November due to injury, reckons he would be just the ticket.

"I've seen the rumours of Roy Keane being interviewed for the job," he said on Sky Sports.

"I have known him a long time, played with him at Celtic and he was my coach at Ireland the last five or six years under Martin O'Neill, when he was number two.

"I know him well, I know he has a lot of fans and is still held in high regard by the fans here.

"It is not my job to comment on the speculation, whether he is the right man for the job or not, that is down to the hierarchy and the board at the club.

"But if he were to get the job, it would give the fans a big boost, similar to the signing of Jermain [Defoe].

"That was a massive coup by the club, he still knows where the goal is, you see the lift the whole club got from him coming in, even just around the place the last couple of days."
