Roy Keane claims Erik ten Hag decision has 'sent a message' to Manchester United squad

Former midfielder Roy Keane believes Manchester United were right to appoint Erik ten Hag as their manager, insisting he has been a "good fit" for the club.

The Dutchman, who was poached from Ajax, currently has United sat fourth in the Premier League table, only behind Newcastle United in third on goal difference. The Reds have also reached the semi-finals of the Carabao Cup, currently boasting a 3-0 advantage at the halfway stage of their semi-final tie with Nottingham Forest.

At the time of writing, United are still alive and kicking in the FA Cup and will resume their Europa League campaign against Spanish giants Barcelona next month. Though the Reds are not expected to push Arsenal and Manchester City in the battle for the Premier League title, they could still end the campaign by winning three major trophies.

But regardless of what happens over the coming months, United have made significant progress under Ten Hag's stewardship, playing an attractive brand of football with a swagger and a degree of confidence. He has also transformed the fortunes of several individuals within his squad, not least Marcus Rashford.

"He's been a good fit," Keane told ITV Sport, speaking ahead of kick-off against Reading on Saturday night. "It was the right time for him to come in last summer, obviously with the problems last year with the manager, the temporary manager leaving, and he got money to spend.

"There was a decent squad there, and he's improved it. His management style, he's obviously Dutch, he's got a bit of arrogance, he's got a lot of confidence, they've got a lot of momentum.

"That's why it's good I think he sent a good message with the starting XI [vs Reading]; they've got momentum and he wants to keep that going. Obviously they're still involved in four competitions, so it's important to keep that momentum going."
