Roy Keane blasts ‘shameful’ displays in Man City defeat: “They should never play for Man United again”

Roy Keane took aim at Manchester United’s players as they collapsed to a 4-1 victory against Manchester City at the Etihad.

Ralf Rangnick’s side failed to register a single shot in the second-half, having gone in at the break still in the game at 2-1 down after Kevin De Bruyne’s goals either side of a Jadon Sancho equaliser.

Riyad Mahrez netted a second-half brace, his first strike effectively bringing an end to any competitiveness in the match, as United’s top-four ambitions took yet another hit.

And former United captain Keane was furious with what he saw from the visitors, slamming the lack of commitment on show from a number of players.

“We’ve just seen a reflection of where the team is and where the club is,” Keane said.

“Whatever’s going on in the dressing room and we hear about problems with the new manager coming in, but eventually your own bit of pride has to kick in at some stage.

“I’ll forgive mistakes, but you’ve got to run back. There’s players, and I’m writing down five or six, that should never play for Man United again. Shameful, just shameful that you can’t run back and put your body on the line.

“The subs came on, you thought they’d have an impact but they weren’t prepared to run around. Wan-Bissaka, Fred, Maguire, Rashford then came on. I could go on.

“Gave up four goals and City didn’t have to be at their best. I thought City had another couple of gears to go.

“They gave up and shame on them.”

United had not lose at the Etihad since 2018 going into the match, but things swiftly fell apart in the second-half as the troubles under Ralf Rangnick continued.

Keane was adamant that the focus should be on the players and their work-rate, rather than any tactical approach.

He said: “The beauty of top-level sport is that there’s no hiding place. We saw all of United’s shortcomings today.

“There’s ways to lose football matches. The way that United lost it today - they stopped running, they gave up. Players not running back, that’s what I don’t understand.

“The manager and the tactics will be questioned, but players not running back while they play for Manchester United. It’s really unacceptable. They threw the towel in which is shameful.”
