Roy Keane backs ‘top quality’ Thomas Tuchel to overcome Chelsea preseason struggles

Roy Keane has backed Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel to successfully navigate through a difficult preseason with the club.

Following a 4-0 loss to Arsenal in Orlando, the German questioned the commitment of his players and offered no guarantees the team would even be ready for the new Premier League season.

While the 2021/22 campaign added the UEFA Super Cup and the Club World Cup to Tuchel’s trophy list following the Champions League final victory over Manchester City, Chelsea must improve on last season.

It has been five years since they lifted the Premier League title and another year without one would make it the longest drought on that front the club have experienced since Roman Abramovich’s takeover in 2003.

The first transfer window of the Todd Boehly-Clearlake Capital era has been a frustrating one too as Barcelona look to pip them to the signing of Jules Kounde, having already done so with Raphinha.

Still, speaking to Sky Bet, pundit Keane backed the former Paris Saint-Germain manager to turn things around.

“There has obviously been loads of uncertainty over the club the last few months, that has been sorted out now obviously with the new ownership coming in,” he said.

“I’m pretty sure again he will be able to bring some players in. He is a top quality manager, he has dealt with a lot of issues over the last few months.

“Ultimately it was a disappointing end to the season for them. But he is a top quality manager and I think the owners will back him. I’d be amazed if he is not there at Christmas.”
