Rough Guides name Edinburgh one of the best places in the world to go with kids in 2022

A global travel brand, Rough Guides, has named Edinburgh among the world's top destinations to travel to with children in 2022.

Coming up with 30 places ideal for a family holiday, the leading travel company put the capital in the top half of the list, at number 14, praising many of the local attractions sure to interest the curious young minds.

However, Edinburgh's local festival culture is what makes the city extra special. Talking about the capital in their guide, the travel brand said: "What makes Edinburgh really stand out are its festivals. There are 12 major festivals throughout the year, from a storytelling event to a science festival and not forgetting the famous Fringe."

Now, it is less than 60 days until the capital is transformed by 'the single greatest celebration of arts and culture on the planet' - the grand Edinburgh Festival Fringe.

This year, the Festival will well and truly be back in full flow after its covid-related cancellation in 2020 and the pandemic having a significant impact on last year's event.

However, it is not only the vibrant festivals that got Edinburgh the prestigious spot on the list. Rough Guides said: "If you don't go during festival season, the Camera Obscura makes for some ridiculous family photos. Then, of course, there's the Museum of Childhood, where you can get nostalgic, and the kids can get hands-on.

"Don't miss the Harry Potter magical guided walking tour around Edinburgh, the city where the world of Harry Potter was born. Kids can test their knowledge with an audio-visual quiz, find their Hogwarts House, and visit Tom Riddle's grave.

"Take an Edinburgh underground vaults tour with older kids to explore beneath the Old Town. The vaults date back to the early 18th century and are packed with tales of murders, witches and other sinister happenings."

There is truly something for a tourist - or a local - of every age here in Edinburgh, and the summer months are especially generous for exciting events, festivals and experiences.
