Rosy Blush Took Over the 2024 Met Gala "Garden"

A woman, Aya Nakamura, with bleached blonde hair and rose blush on the 2024 met gala red carpet.

As per usual at the 2024 Met Gala, stars were tasked with a very specific dress code. This time around, it was "The Garden In Time." The event's invitations, decor, and even tent leaned heavily on rose imagery—a trend that continued through its attendees' blushing complexions.

Walking the pale green carpet on Monday, May 6, guests like Gigi Hadid (in custom Thom Browne), Ayo Edibiri (in Loewe), Tyla, and Aya Nakamura rocked majorly rosy blush. Even Greta Lee got in on the action—albeit with a slightly more glass skin-like finish.

"The look is very ethereal," Edibiri's makeup artist, Dana Delaney, told Marie Claire about her client's blush-forward makeup for the evening. "She's got a really gorgeous floral gown, so we wanted her face to look like it's blooming from this garden, so I wanted to keep it fresh, dewy, and soft."

To get Edibiri's cheeks to blush just so, Delaney used products from Ilia with the brand's Multi-Stick in A Fine Romance pulling the majority of the weight. Other celebrities, like Phoebe Dynevor, wore Charlotte Tilbury, whose famous Pillow Talk was a perfect rosy shade for the occasion.

While rose blush is nothing new, it's fun to see celebrities experimenting with more color at the Met. The 2023 event, which honored the late Karl Lagerfeld, was home to plenty of black-and-white looks and subsequently simple makeup—a far cry from the lush garden designs of today.

A rosy cheek wasn't the only floral-inspired makeup to be seen, either—the fresh look extended to every aspect of some celebs' glam. Gigi Hadid, for instance, paired her pink cheeks with a fresh red lip. Furthermore, her French manicure was decorated with a number of tiny hand-sculpted, yellow 3D rose by celebrity nail artist Mei Kawajiri.

"We wanted the nail looks to be a continuation of her Met Gala look," the artist told Marie Claire ahead of the red carpet.

A rose is a rose, I suppose I suppose. But a rose blush moment at the Met Gala? That's something entirely different—and very special.
