Ross Wilson's sudden exit from Rangers for Nottingham Forest seems to have been more warmly received by supporters than many of his transfer dealings.
The Sporting Director completed a swift move to the Premier League on Wednesday after three-and-a-half years in Govan in which he helped deliver title number 55, a Scottish Cup and a Europa league Final. But major question marks have hung over his signing policy. Willie Mercer, Dumfries, said: “It says everything about the job Ross Wilson has done at Rangers, when we will receive more for him than for most of the players he has brought to the club. He is a lucky man leaving before at least £20million walks out the door in May. He should have been sacked.”
Eddie Easson, Ballingery, blasted: “Another ditching the sinking ship. Wilson has got out before he was sacked. If Michael Beale doesn’t lift the Scottish Cup this year there will be a few shoogly pegs at Ibrox. Meanwhile good old Dave King appears at the right time to stick the dagger in the Rangers board. Of course he turned down fortunes for his shares just like the Rangers board turned down millions for Morelos.” Scott Gowers, Edinburgh, said: “All Ross Wilson has done is brought crocks and mediocre players to Ibrox. Yes financially his hands were tied but the reality is that he didn't cut it. Every SPFL club have signed players for a pittance and many are proving their worth, we have many talented youngsters who Ross Wilson looked past. Given the chance one could be the next Barry Ferguson. The best part of Wilson's exit is the unbelievable fact that Rangers will receive a six figure fee. Goodbye and good riddance.”
Andrew Lamb, Fraserburgh , added: “Whilst I clear Ross Wilson of blame for allowing Kent and Morelos to run down their contracts, it's fair to say that he signed a few pups and the likes of Rabbi Mantondo, Juninho Bacuna, Scott Wright, Ianis Hagi and Ben Davies are not consistently good enough. Sadly, that's the financial place Rangers are at.”
There was at least some appreciation for Wilson though as Frank McFerran, Carrickfergus, said: “Personally I’ll be sorry to see Ross Wilson go, he did a good job with little money, he brought in good players and mediocre players but that happens in every club. I wish him well and hope John Park steps up.”
It wasn’t long until the chat returned to the Old Firm referee row - with Hotline regular Chris Lowe stoking the fire by claiming the SFA were “hostile” towards Rangers and were less hasty to condemn the abusive banner towards assistant ref Douglas Ross.
Liam Birney, Paisley, said: “Is there nothing that Chris Lowe won't do to have a go at Celtic including leading the Douglas Ross Fan Club? Talk about desperation. Just focus on your team's inadequacies as Celtic are doing just fine thanks.”
Arrin Geddes, Irvine, said: “Scott Gowers and Chris Lowe are still raging after a subjective VAR decision finally goes against their team. They talk of hostility towards them from the SFA - hostile is having a glass bottle hit you in the head, not getting a reply to a ridiculous letter.”
Kenny Wilson, Moffat, added: “It’s amazing the power referee’s have to influence things. According to Rangers fans Celtic are 12 points clear because of refs, have a greater goal difference of 29 because of refs, have won three out of four games against them because of refs and even because of refs Rangers are the worst team in Champions Leagues history! Now that is an influence.”
Finally, and Henry Moffat, Stirling, appears to have the popcorn out as he said: “What a glorious time to be a Celtic supporter. The board, manager and players deserve massive credit for making us the single dominant club in Scottish football on and off the park, with finances that David Murray could only have dreamed of. The gap between us and the other mob is at its biggest in history and getting bigger every week. Well done Celtic.”
