Ross Stewart a reported transfer target for Premier League relegation strugglers

Sunderland's Ross Stewart is a transfer target for Premier League relegation candidates Norwich City, according to reports. The 25-year-old striker is League One's top scorer this season with 22 goals so far, with that form rewarded with a call-up to the Scotland squad where he is currently away on international duty.

It has also attracted attention from a number of clubs in the Championship, with Swansea City showing interest during the January transfer window, and now The Sun claims that Norwich are also keeping tabs on Stewart. But Stewart, who joined the Black Cats from Scottish Premiership side Ross County in January 2021, is under contract until the end of next season.

And when his move to Wearside was confirmed, it was announced that he had joined on an 'initial' two-and-a-half year contract, with the club holding an option to extend his stay by another 12 months which would mean until the summer of 2024. Despite that security, Sunderland are keen to offer Stewart improved terms to reflect the impact that he has made south of the Border.

Those talks are likely to take place in the coming months and reports that other clubs are monitoring the former St Mirren man will only strengthen Stewart's hand in any negotiations. When Stewart first joined Sunderland, he was struggling with a hamstring injury which meant he had to wait until mid-March before making his debut - although he marked the occasion with a goal in an away win at Accrington.

Stewart also scored in Sunderland's away win at Plymouth in May which secured the club's place in the play-offs, and again in the play-off semi-final against Lincoln City although the Black Cats lost out to the Imps over two legs. Charlie Wyke was Sunderland's 26-goal top scorer in the league last season but he left in the summer, since when Stewart has stepped up to the plate and he has been an ever-present in the league this season as he closes in on Wyke's tally.
