Roscommon matches postponed due to referee protest following alleged assault

All GAA fixtures in Roscommon have been postponed this weekend as referees in the county have withdrawn their services.

The matches due to take place this weekend will now be played on 16-18 September.

"Roscommon GAA have been informed by the Roscommon Referee's Committee that they are withdrawing their services for all matches scheduled in the county for today, tomorrow and Sunday," said a statement from the county board on Friday afternoon.

"The Referee’s Committee feel that this action is necessary to strongly condemn any form of violence, aggression or abuse towards match officials in the GAA.

"Roscommon GAA strongly condemns any behaviour that puts any of our match officials at risk.

"All matches that were due to be played this weekend will be rescheduled to the 16th, 17th and 18th September 2022."

The move from referees is a show of solidarity for their colleague Kevin Naughton, who spent Wednesday night in hospital following an alleged assault during a minor game between St Aidan’s and St Dominic’s, which was subsequently abandoned.

Recruitment of referees has become increasingly difficult for the GAA right across the country, partly as a result of physical abuse, and match officials in Roscommon are taking a strong stand following the alleged incident on Tuesday night.

Roscommon GAA have commenced an investigation and St Aidan’s, the club who hosted the game on Tuesday night, has promised to co-operate fully.

The alleged incident took place early in the second half of the game when the referee issued a red card to an individual who was not one of the players but who had encroached on the field.

Emergency medical attention was called and the referee was taken to hospital for observation before being released yesterday with no significant injury.

Speaking to the Irish Mirror after his release from hospital, Mr Naughton said: "Healthwise, I'm trying to deal with that at this stage but I won't be saying anymore.

"I won't be making a statement at this time. I appreciate the call but I'm not prepared to say anything in any media at this time."

The Gardaí has said it was aware of footage of the alleged assault and was carrying out enquiries.
