Rosanna Davison has welcomed a committee being set up to tackle rights around international surrogacy – but said a “commitment” needs to be delivered.
A special joint Oireachtas committee’s terms of reference state that consideration will be required regarding the rights, interests and welfare of children born through international surrogacy.
Rosanna, whose two-year-old daughter Sophia was born via surrogacy in Kiev, said: “A positive step forward but the commitment must be delivered on.”
Sophia was born via gestational carrier in 2019 after Rosanna suffered a heartbreaking number of miscarriages.
The daughter of singer Chris De Burgh then gave birth to her twin sons Hugo and Oscar naturally.
She is now campaigning for parents like her of children born through international surrogacy as Sophia does not have the same rights as Hugo and Oscar.
