Rory McKenzie says Kilmarnock performance shows character and outlines pedigree

Rory McKenzie reckons Kilmarnock showed true character by battling with Dundee United all the way on Saturday.

The Arabs came out on top 2-1 in their Scottish Cup clash after an extra-time goal from Dylan Levitt – but midfielder McKenzie says the Ayrshire side showed their Premiership pedigree as they aim to get back to the top flight.

The 28-year-old, who equalised after Marc McNulty opened the scoring in three minutes, says he was gutted to be out the cup – but is in agreement that there were plenty of positives.

He said: “I thought we were the better team, they had their moments, of course they did.

“But for large parts and particularly a spell in the second half where if we’d taken a chance we could’ve gone on to win the game.

“We were superb and hopefully we can take that into the next 15 games.

“It shows what we’ve got. It was a good atmosphere to play in and it’s not felt like that this season at times against some teams in the Championship.

“It was thoroughly enjoyable so, although it’s a defeat, you’ve got to take the positives from it.”

He added: “In weeks gone by we’d have folded after that but I think that showed we’ve got character.

“It’s a cup game, it’s going to be a different atmosphere, Dundee United brought loads of fans but I think everyone got on board and saw the way we were trying to work.

“Working under the new manager has been thoroughly enjoyable.

“He’s been a breath of fresh air, the coaching staff, the training, the ideas he wants to implement, the signings made.”

“The ones he’s brought in have brought quality – Ash [Taylor], young Dylan [Tait], Kyle [Lafferty] is back!

“That just shows you the intent of the club."
