If we were to rely on one color scheme for the rest of our lives, it would involve neutrals. This range of versatile hues is a consistently timeless choice, and they prove themselves to work in every type of space – from the bedroom to our entertaining rooms. The latter is the case in Rory McIlroy's Florida abode.
The Northern Irish golf pro tapped into the biggest neutral color trend of the year, painting his dining room a cocooning brown hue that, experts say, has earthy, grounding qualities (and is a refreshingly easy decorating base).
Brown color palettes have been a prominent trend in the interior world recently, with more and more people looking to incorporate earthy, warm tones into the home,' comments Georgia Metcalfe, the founder and creative director of French Bedroom. It's hard to go wrong when decorating with brown; as Metcalfe suggests, the hue has all the benefits of an ageless neutral while still making more of a statement than whites and grays (though, of course, these tones have their benefits, too).
In McIlroy's case, the brown-painted walls complement other neutrals around the space, including a white dining table, cream chairs, and curtains. It also creates an unobtrusive frame for the window, allowing his backyard to take center stage – blurring the lines between indoor and outdoor living in the process.
In spaces without a tropical yard to distract (sadly, we can't all enjoy the greenery of the Sunshine State), Metcalfe recommends pairing brown hues with statement rattan furnishings. 'Rattan works particularly well for this design trend, as this material is unique and distinctive in its color and texture,' she says. Similarly, investing in botanical printed accessories, such as cushions (or bedding when used in the bedroom), will bring this hue to life.
'The neutral hues will beautifully elevate the space, pairing effortlessly with floral or botanical prints for a fun and whimsical bohemian appeal. The refined style of rattan also lends itself well to delicate vases with fresh flowers on the table, as well as tasteful and opulent lighting.'
Plus, Metcalfe isn't alone in her admiration for this trending hue. David Harris, the design director at Andrew Martin, adds that darker browns and taupes have the power to 'define a space' while 'maintaining a serene and calming mood' – something that is particularly perfect for a sociable space like a living or dining room.
'I’d use this color in a living room as it’d create an intimate, calming environment,' Harris says. 'These sorts of neutral shades are popular as people are looking to create a relaxing haven. Paint colors like Wild Truffle are strong dark shades, but they help ground a room, confidently sinking into the background to let other colors and textures shine.'
