Rory McIlroy to face LIV golfers at St Andrews in Alfred Dunhill Links Championship

Rory McIlroy is set to come up against a number of LIV golfers at St Andrews next weekend.

The world number two will compete at the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship in Scotland, which runs from September 29 - October 2.

At the time of writing, ten LIV golfers are also set to play the tournament, which has a prize pot of €4.8million.

They are: Talor Gooch, Abraham Ancer, Louis Oosthuizen, Charl Schwartzel, Shaun Norris, Branden Grace, Richard Bland, Laurie Canter, Peter Uihlein and Jed Morgan.

McIlroy has been one of the most vocal critics of the controversial LIV Golf Series and let his anger known when 12 LIV golfers played at the BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth, which was won by Shane Lowry, earlier this month.

Speaking after his Tour Championship win, McIlroy said: "I hate what [LIV] is doing to the game of golf. I hate it. I really do. Like, it’s going to be hard for me to stomach going to Wentworth in a couple of weeks’ time and seeing 18 of them there. That just doesn’t sit right with me."

Lowry has also been critical of the LIV Series and said his victory at Wentworth was "one for the good guys".

Meanwhile, LIV player Cameron Smith couldn't help but chuckle at a journalist's question that slagged off McIlroy before then sidestepping answering it.

The 29-year-old was speaking at a media event alongside Phil Mickelson and Matt Wolff ahead of the latest LIV Golf event in Chicago.

The mundane scene took a bizarre turn when a journalist from 'Drunk By The Turn' posed the following question:

Reporter: "I just wanted to reflect on you being the 150th winner of the Open, and I know you had spoken about how many beers you could fit in the Claret Jug, I think it was two. I was just wondering how many of Rory McIlroy's tears were you able to fit in it after you won?"

Smith smirked at the question before opting to be diplomatic about it by wisely saying 'I'm not answering that.'

The Australian captured his maiden title on the controversial circuit over the weekend at Rich Harvest Farms in Chicago where he secured a three-shot win.
