Rory McIlroy throws remote controlled ball into water during unusual incident

Rory McIlroy appeared to angrily throw a remote control ball into the water during an unusual incident at Wilmington Country Club. McIlroy was lining up a birdie on the 15th hole at the BMW Championship, when another ball appeared on the green.

As the ball whizzed around the flack stick, apparently on its own accord, it became evident the ball was being controlled remotely. A spectator declared "I'm going to make a hole in one".

McIlroy appeared amused by the antic though and attempted to swat the ball away with his putter. He then picked up and ball and threw it into the water.

The spectator, who shouted "this is my dream" as McIlroy tried to swat the ball away, came to the side of the green. He appeared to remonstrate with McIlroy, reports the Irish Mirror.

But McIlroy's caddy Harry Diamond ordered the spectator away before a local officer escorted him off the premises. It was a frustrating day on the course for McIlroy who sits five shots off the lead set by Patrick Cantlay heading into the final round.

Starting his round off with two bogeys, McIlroy struggled with his putter in taking 37 strokes to play the front nine. But four birdies in the space of six holes from the 12th hole had him back in contention only for the two-time FedEx Cup champion to take three putts on the final hole from 17 feet.

Shane Lowry also endured a frustrating third round and sits on five-under-par, two behind McIlroy. The former Open champion has a lot to play for though as he is currently projected to finish in 34th spot in the FedEx Cup but needs to get into the top 30 to play next week's Tour Championship.
