Rory McIlroy still strikes it rich despite coming up short in Open Championship

It won't be much consolation to Rory McIlroy but his third place finish at the Open Championship saw him pocket €933,000.

McIlroy was the favourite to win the 150th Open Championship at St Andrews after being tied for the lead with Victor Hovland heading into the final round.

When Hovland began to falter, McIlroy hit the front and remained there for the majority of the final round.

However, Aussie Cameron Smith came alive at the turn and he played the back nine in 30 strokes to shoot a 64 and lift the Claret Jug in stunning fashion.

McIlroy was unable to take advantage of some good birdie opportunities on the back nine to come up agonisingly short in his efforts to end an eight-year major drought.

Smith was winning his first ever major championship and also pocketed a cool €2,500,000 first prize at the most famous course in golf.
