Rory McIlroy's US PGA prizemoney will soften blow of LIV golf champion after mixed week

Rory McIlroy admitted his game was nowhere near where he needed it to be at Oak Hill, New York for the US PGA as his major drought continued.

American powerhouse Brooks Koepka claimed the title in Rochester, ending his own four year wait for major success after challenges from Viktor Hovland and Scottie Scheffler fell short.

For Holywood ace McIlroy, there was some satisfaction having finished in the top 10 at a major having been well short of his best and he admitted to having mixed feelings afterwards.

"I feel like my game is almost there, but also like it is so far away," he said after the final round at Oak Hill - the home club of his wife Erica.

LIV Golf star Koepka landed a cool $2.7million along with the Wanamaker trophy. The money will likely mean little after LIV reportedly paid him $100 million in guaranteed earnings to lure him away from the PGA Tour last June.

Koepka carded a closing 67 to finish nine under par and claim his third US PGA title, his fifth major overall and the first for a player on the Saudi-funded LIV Golf League.

Six weeks after feeling he “choked” in the final round of the Masters, Koepka held his nerve to overcome a spirited challenge from Hovland.

McIlroy finished well back in seventh place and still took home $475,000, that's around £380,000 sterling.

Just last week, McIlroy topped the list of UK's richest sportspeople aged under 35, according to the 2023 Sunday Times Rich List.

The Holywood golfer was also named the richest young person in Northern Ireland having boosted his £60 million earnings on the fairways with sponsorship deals from big names such as Nike.

According to the Sunday Times list, published on May 19, McIlroy is worth an estimated £200m.
