Rory McIlroy reveals key equipment change before Masters that 'turned year around'

Rory McIlroy has revealed he made a key equipment change to his game which help him turn his year around. McIlroy was back to his best in 2022, having become No. 1 golfer in the world one more.

The Northern Irishman has starred on both the PGA and DP World Tours, winning both campaign titles in the FedEx Cup and more recently the DP World Tour rankings crown. McIlroy won three titles in 2022, and finished inside the top 10 at all four major championships.

His year really kicked into gear at the Masters, after he carded a remarkable eight-under-par 64 in his final round to finish second behind green jacket winner Scottie Scheffler.

It was at this point that the Northern Irish star made a slight change to his equipment in the form of using a different ball, but since the switch he has not looked back. Speaking after his season finale win last Sunday, McIlroy said: "Yeah, [I am] very proud of myself [this year].

"Harry [Diamond] and I were talking going up the last fairway. It seems like it's a long time since San Antonio, the Texas Open the week before Augusta this year when I was sort of struggling a little bit and made a couple of tweaks with my game and with my equipment.

"[I] went to a different golf ball. It seemed like just after that, my whole year turned around and got a ton the momentum at the Masters and just went from there." A key component to his successes in 2022, has been McIlroy's remarkable consistency when out competing.

Since the opening major of the season at Augusta, McIlroy has missed just one cut and has been a main-stay at the top of leaderboards across the year. Speaking on how his game has improved, he went on: "I think one of the things I'm really proud of over the last few years is I don't feel I have to rely on one aspect of my game.

"I think if my driving isn't there, then my putter bails me out. If my putter isn't there, my iron play bails me out. I feel like when you get to this level, it's like, okay, how can you make those incremental improvements to get better.

"I think my goal has been to just become a more complete golfer and I feel like I'm on the journey to doing that. But I definitely -- I'm as complete a golfer as I feel like I've ever been, and hopefully I can continue on that path."
