Rory McIlroy pledges support for Co Tyrone suicide prevention charity

Rory McIlroy has pledged his support to a Co Tyrone suicide prevention charity.

The golf superstar responded to a request from a lady on Twitter asking for his support for the Dungannon -based charity, set up in memory of a young teenager who died by suicide in 2006.

Sharon Gallagher, Vice-chairperson of the Niamh Louise Foundation, messaged the Holywood golfer asking for his support for the charity's fundraising Gala event this October.

Sharon wrote: " @McIlroyRory hi i am tweetin on behalf of Niamh Louise Foundation in Dgn. We deal with suicide intervention & victims of suicide & would be grateful if you could support our fundraising auction or raffle on 15th Oct as demand is high and we struggle for funding. Thank you."

And although the four-time major winner has more than 3 million followers on the social networking site, he responded to Sharon saying he would be happy to help.

Rory replied: "Hi Sharon. Pleased to send something for your auction or raffle. Should I send to the address on your website?"

The Niamh Louise Foundation was established following the tragic death of 15-year-old Niamh McKee, who hailed from the small rural community of Clonmore, Co Armagh, just outside Dungannon.

Niamh's mother Catherine founded the charity following her daughter's death which sent shockwaves around the community.

Speaking about the support of Rory McIlroy for their Chicago themed Gala Ball in Cookstown on October 15, Catherine told MyTyrone: "We are overjoyed that Rory McIlroy has taken the time to respond to Sharon's tweet and support us at our Gala which will raise monies and awareness for individuals and families bereaved by suicide and individuals at risk of suicide."

Describing the work they do on their website, the charity explains: "The Niamh Louise Foundation also provides postvention services. This includes providing support for bereaved families who have lost a loved one to suicide and support for those who have been affected by suicide. This is done through complementary therapy and mentoring and befriending for all those in the community who have been affected by suicide as well as for those who are at risk and are in emotional distress and despair.

"The Foundation offers a number of groups, for all ages, with an all-inclusive policy, integrating individuals together regardless of religion, ethnicity, or political traditions, thus promoting relationship development between these differing traditions, and actively increasing cross community diversity whilst supporting them with their thoughts of suicide, self-harm, or their bereavement."
