Rory McIlroy launched a violent outburst in a bunker before launching himself to the top of the leaderboard in the third major of the year.
All the world's top golfers are in Boston at Brookline for the US Open and McIlroy is hoping for back to back victories after winning at last week's Canadian Open.
And McIlroy found himself with a horrid stance after a way ward drive on the fifth hole and after trying to launch a recovery pitch, McIlroy hit the adjacent bunker.
The world number three launched a violent outburst in the bunker as he hit the sand twice out of anger.
The four time major winner would then leave himself with 10 feet for a par out of the bunker and remarkably saved par to keep himself at the top end of the leaderboard.
And McIlroy would go on to birdie back to back holes as he took a one shot lead at the top.
But the former World Number One bogeyed his last hole of the day after missing the green on his approach shot to drop a shot which was still good for the early clubhouse lead.
