Rory McIlroy holes out from 112 yards for incredible eagle at Ryder Cup course

Rory McIlroy sent the crowd wild at the Italian Open on Friday after he holed out from 112 yards for eagle midway through his first round.

The World number two had made a slow start and was +1 after 11 holes. McIlroy came to life on the back nine however, and went home in just 30 shots to shoot a four-under 67 to put him inside the top-10 on the leaderboard.

The Northern Irish golfer stood on the third tee, his 12th hole of the day having started on the back nine, in 25th position on the leaderboard. A monster drive and a gorgeous wedge later, his name was soaring up the leaderboard.

After hitting a bomb of a drive, McIlroy found himself with just over 110 yards to the flag. With no danger in sight, the four-time major winner grabbed a wedge from the bag and went right at the flag.

He judged the yardage perfectly, with the ball landing pin-high before spinning back into the hole. The majestic shot sent the crowd into raptures at the Marco Simone Golf & Country Club.

The Roman golf course is the track for next years Ryder Cup so McIlroy will undoubtedly be eager to create some more good memories at the venue before the showdown with Team USA in 2023.

Having come so close to victory at the BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth only to be pipped at the post by Shane Lowry, The 33-year-old has his work cut out for him if he wants to pick up a third victory of the year this week.

US Open Champion Matt Fitzpatrick's has made a stunning start to the tournament, and tops the leaderboard on 10-under par six holes into his second round.
