Rory McIlroy has QUADRUPLE BOGEY on horror 12th hole at Travelers Championship

Rory McIlroy has been fire over the past few weeks. A dramatic victory at the Canadian Open was followed up by a strong showing at the US Open last week. And over the first round and a half of action at this week's Travelers Championship, he was cruising.

Through 11 holes Rory was in top form. Five under par for his round, McIlroy had just set him up for a tap-in birdie on the Par-3 11th to send him top of the leaderboard on 12-under par.

And then he stepped up onto the 12th tee.

First he pulled his drive left out of bounds with a massive snap hook. Moments later, he reloaded and with his three from the tee, he blocked his second tee shot way right towards some thick rough.

Luckily, the Northern Irishman somehow ended up getting a decent lie. Yet, inexplicably managed to fly the green and ended plugged in a deep bunker.

McIlroy's short game has been lauded in recent weeks, but it let him down big-time here. First, he thinned a wedge out of the bunker which flew back over the green towards the fairway.

And then, when things couldn't get worse, he duffed a chip.

After six shots, Rory still hadn't reached the green. He managed to get up and down from just off the ground to wind up with an embarrassing eight on the Par-4 hole. It was only the 6th quadruple bogey in his historic career.

For a brief moment, McIlroy looked more like you're average club golfer and not a four time major champion. Perhaps there's hope for us mere mortals yet.

With that being said, Rory proceeded to step up on the 13th tee and smash one over 300 yards down the middle of the fairway.

At the moment, McIlroy is in third place on the leaderboard with a score of 9-under par. He's just three shots off Xander Schauffele in top spot.
