On a pure talent level, Roquan Smith is one of the NFL’s best pure off-ball linebackers. He wouldn’t have two Second-Team All-Pro selections if he wasn’t someone that could tilt the field in the favor of his defense. But despite his obvious talent, the now-former Chicago Bears linebacker revealed he was a little surprised by his recent blockbuster trade to the Baltimore Ravens.
Per a report from ESPN‘s Jamison Hensley — even despite a kerfuffle over his contract in the offseason — Smith said he was caught a little off-guard by the move to Baltimore:
“I didn’t plan to [get traded], but you know, life happens at times and got traded,” Smith said, flashing a wide grin. “So initially I was shocked. But I’m excited to be here. Good group of guys that’s contending for a title, and that’s what I’m in the game to play for — playing for a title.”
Ah, that latter sentiment is the key part, and something Smith should keep in mind as he adjusts to new teammates, a new facility, and a new coaching staff.
The Ravens are trying to win a Super Bowl this season, and they want Smith to be one of the pieces to their puzzle. The Bears, by contrast, might have a bright future with a blossoming Justin Fields, but they’re in no way, shape, or form ready for the bright lights of the postseason (if they even get there).
Oddsmakers with Tipico Sportsbook seem to agree with what Smith’s addition can do for the Baltimore defense. At the moment, the Ravens have the third-best odds of winning the AFC at +900 (behind the Bills and Chiefs). They are tied with the Cowboys at +1500 odds of winning Super Bowl 57 behind the Bills, Eagles, Chiefs, and 49ers).
In a chaotic year where there doesn’t seem to be much of a middle class in the NFL, the Ravens and Smith very well might find themselves in a great contending position come the winter. Smith should consider himself lucky in that regard.
