Sydney Roosters' American recruit Liz Tafuna will return to the US after a medical issue dashed the trailblazer's NRLW dream.
The Roosters confirmed on Thursday the rugby sevens convert had been released from her one-year deal, less than three months after becoming the NRLW's first American signing.
The New Zealand-born 21-year-old had been scouted as part of the NRL's talent combine in Las Vegas, organised during the league's foray into North America earlier this year.
But after joining the Roosters for pre-season training this month, Tafuna was hampered by a medical issue.
AAP understands the medical issue is not life-threatening but Tafuna struggled to keep up with teammates, leaving the parties little option but to part ways.
"Liz is a talented footballer so it's disappointing that she is no longer available to continue as a member of our NRLW squad," said Roosters coach John Strange.
"But this is clearly in her best interests and we wish her all the very best for the future."
The Roosters now have a roster spot open but are under no obligation to fill it ahead of the new season.
Led by captain Isabelle Kelly, the side will hope to improve on back-to-back semi-final losses when the season kicks off on July 25.
