A roof of a double-decker bus was ripped off after crashing into a bridge yesterday evening. Police sealed off Barton Lane in Eccles, Greater Manchester, following the major collision after the driver misjudged the height of the bridge.
Pictures from the scene show the chaotic aftermath with the entire roof entirely torn off, leaving chairs on the upper floor completely exposed. A number of police vehicles were also seen in attendance at the accident, the M.E.N reports.
One witness said there were no passengers on board at the time of the crash. They added: "It was a low bridge that the bus tried to go under - but the bridge was too low and cut off the roof of the bus.
"It was around 9pm when the bus was approaching the bridge. I thought it was going to stop when they (the driver) realised the height restriction but it just carried on. Luckily there were no passengers on board.
"The bus drove all way under which peeled the top off with ease. Police responded and closed both sides, there are no ambulances present."
GMP also shared pictures from the scene of the crash as they announced the road was shut with the Ports Authority also called in to assess the damage. It's unclear if there were any injuries in the collision but the force have been contacted for more details.
Barton Lane was cordoned off by officers in both directions between Trafford Road to B5211 Redclyffe Road. In a tweet shared by GMP Traffic, the force wrote: "Barton Lane, Eccles is currently closed both ways due to a bridge strike by a bus.
The road will remain closed until the Ports Authority can attend and assess / repair any damage. Please avoid and plan an alternative route as there may be subsequent local delays."
Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service say they were not called to the incident. Diamond Bus North West have been approached for comment.
