Ronald Koeman reveals where Manchester United target Frenkie de Jong wants to play next season

Manchester United target Frenkie de Jong has told Ronald Koeman that he doesn't want to leave the Nou Camp this summer, according to the former Barcelona manager. United and the cash-strapped Catalans are hopeful of coming to an agreement over a transfer for the Netherlands international soon.

De Jong, 25, has been identified as a priority target for the rebuild under Erik ten Hag and talks with the playmaker are progressing. United also want to sign free agent Christian Eriksen - as well as a new centre-back and goalkeeper to replace Nottingham Forest-bound loanee Dean Henderson.

De Jong is seemingly happy at the Nou Camp but Barcelona are in dire financial straits and the Dutchman is one of their most saleable assets. The emergence of La Masia graduates Pedri and Gavi in the first-team midfield have lessened the need for Barcelona to retain De Jong.

Koeman was Netherlands manager when De Jong moved from Ajax to Barcelona in 2019 and, a year later, inherited the midfielder when appointed in Nou Camp dugout. The 59-year-old has since left that position, but will be reunited with De Jong after the World Cup in Qatar, when he replaces ex-United manager Louis van Gaal in charge of the national team.

Speaking on the latest Vaques Sagrades episode, Koeman said: "All I know is that Frenkie wants to stay with Barca. That is what he said a few days ago. But I don't know if Barca want to sell him or should sell him, because they need money. He is one of the few people for whom a lot of money can be asked."
