Ron Rivera: ‘We are not done’

When the Washington Commanders announced their initial 53-man roster on Tuesday, it was obvious they weren’t done.

Two positions stood out on Washington’s initial roster: cornerback and linebacker. The Commanders kept only four cornerbacks, including a seventh-round rookie. At linebacker, Washington kept five players.

On Tuesday, Washington head coach Ron Rivera met with the media and discussed some of the team’s roster moves. When Rivera was asked about the Commanders cutting cornerbacks Danny Johnson and Corn Elder, he had a simple, direct answer.

“As we go through this, we are not done.”

As a follow-up, Rivera was asked how much Saturday’s preseason finale went into the roster decisions.

“No, like I said, guys, we are not done yet,” he said. “To give you any insider information on that, that wouldn’t be fair to them.”

So does Rivera anticipate making more moves?

“We have time,” Rivera said. “That’s all I’ll say. We have time. We have some things that we have to work through as far as I talked about. Just getting the evaluations.”

That sure sounds like a coach who knows there will be options. After neglecting the cornerback and linebacker positions for the most part in the offseason, the fair question would be how confident are you in Rivera and general manager Martin Mayhew to capably fill those positions?

Again, it’s a fair question.

You should expect Washington to make multiple moves over the next few days.
