Ron Rivera feels comfortable with Taylor Heinicke as Commanders quarterback

Quarterback Taylor Heinicke almost led the Washington Commanders to another fourth-quarterback comeback win over the New York Giants Sunday. While Heinicke led the Commanders back, he couldn’t get them over the hump, and the game ended in a 20-20 tie.

Heinicke completed 27 of 41 passes for 275 yards and two touchdowns against the Giants. Early in the game, Heinicke missed several throws high, including one to tight end Logan Thomas that would’ve gone for a touchdown. The Commanders ended that possession with a field goal.

As the game wore on, Heinicke appeared more comfortable and was at his best with the Commanders down 23-16 with under four minutes remaining in the game. Heinicke led Washington on an eight-play, 90-yard drive that ended with a touchdown pass to Jahan Dotson. Heinicke’s fourth-down completion to Curtis Samuel was arguably the best throw from around the NFL in Week 14.

Washington head coach Ron Rivera met with the media Monday and was asked if he had any intentions or thoughts about going back to Carson Wentz.

“Not necessarily; this is who we are,” Rivera said. “That’s how we play, we’re running the ball well right now, we’re controlling the time of possession, keeping our defense fresh.”

Rivera was then asked if he still viewed the quarterback position as week-to-week once Wentz is activated.

“I feel comfortable with Taylor,” Rivera said. “When Carson’s activated, he’ll be the primary backup, and we’ll go from there.”

Rivera named Heinicke as the starting quarterback weeks ago, yet he is still being asked about his decision. It isn’t like Heinicke has embarrassed himself or the team since Rivera’s decision. Yes, the passing game could and should be better, but how does anyone know Wentz can make it better?

Pass protection remains an issue, especially with injuries to Sam Cosmi and Tyler Larsen from Sunday’s game. The team wants Heinicke as the quarterback right now and barring an ugly collapse, that’s not likely to change in the coming weeks.
