Ron Gordon earns Rangers and Celtic Viaplay Cup Final tribute with Hampden set to pay respect

Ron Gordon will be honoured at this weekend’s Viaplay Cup final with a minute’s applause after he sadly passed away.

The Hibs executive chairman and owner revealed earlier this year he had been receiving treatment for cancer, but hoped to be back at Easter Road soon. However, the capital club confirmed yesterday that Gordon had lost his battle earlier on Tuesday morning.

Celtic take on Rangers in the first cup final of the season at Hampden on Sunday. And the SPFL has now confirmed that as a mark of respect to the American businessman, a minute’s applause will be held prior to kick-off. Gordon watched on from the stands last year as the Hibees took the lead in the final of this competition - previously named the Premier Sports Cup - through Paul Hanlon. However, Celtic came from behind to break Hibs hearts with a Kyogo double and win their first piece of silverware under Ange Postecoglou.

SPFL chief operating officer Calum Beattie said: “The SPFL Board, our staff and directors of both Rangers and Celtic were very keen to honour Ron’s memory following the news of his sudden passing. He was universally admired in the Scottish game and we are sure that both sets of fans will wish to play their part in honouring someone who had Scottish football’s very best interests at heart and who had played a key role in the development of the league in his time as a director.”
