Ron DeSantis shifts focus to South Carolina primary, raises eyebrows

Governor Ron DeSantis is dividing his time between New Hampshire and South Carolina.

In a strategic move ahead of the South Carolina primary, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has shifted his campaign focus to the Palmetto State, leading some to believe he may be neglecting his chances in New Hampshire. Despite criticism, DeSantis maintains that his decision is justified and that he will perform well in both states.

DeSantis' choice to prioritize South Carolina has raised eyebrows among his opponents, particularly in New Hampshire where the primary is a mere three days away. Critics argue that his heavy time investment in South Carolina suggests he has given up on the Granite State. South Carolina's more conservative voter base and its status as former Governor Nikki Haley's home state make it a potentially more favorable battleground for DeSantis.

Acknowledging the criticism, a campaign aide clarified that while the focus has primarily been on South Carolina, DeSantis has not completely abandoned New Hampshire. He made a campaign appearance in the state last night and has plans to return, possibly as early as tomorrow evening. The aide emphasized the campaign's intention to accumulate delegates and hinted at increased expenditure in the coming weeks.

The Super PAC supporting DeSantis has faced setbacks, reducing its staff after investing considerable resources in Iowa and finishing second in the state's caucuses. To bolster support in South Carolina, the majority of DeSantis' campaign staff has been relocated there. The move is seen as a calculated effort to establish a strong presence in Haley's home state and directly challenge her electoral prospects.

Amid this strategic shift, a spokesperson for Haley responded by welcoming DeSantis to South Carolina, describing it as a great state and possibly suggesting that his campaign may not find the success he hopes for. The spokesperson also dismissed DeSantis' claims regarding Haley's expected performance in her home state.

Meanwhile, Donald Trump remains the frontrunner in national polls, solidifying his position as the Republican Party's leading candidate.

Governor DeSantis is set to host a meet and greet event at a surf-themed restaurant in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, followed by a voter Q&A session organized by the Super PAC. His upcoming schedule remains uncertain, but he is expected to make additional stops in the state capital of Columbia, once governed by Nikki Haley.

As the primary season progresses, DeSantis aims to accumulate delegates and maintain his competitive edge in the race for the Republican nomination. The outcome of his strategic shift to South Carolina will undoubtedly play a crucial role in shaping the dynamics of the campaign moving forward.
