Romeo Beckham set for permanent Premier League transfer as dad David plays key role

Romeo Beckham is set to join Brentford on a one-year permanent deal.

The 20-year-old winger, who is the son of Manchester United legend David, will spend the 2023-24 campaign playing for Brentford's 'B' team after a six-month loan spell last season. He will be released from his Inter Miami contract to play for the Premier League club.

Brentford will pay a nominal transfer fee to Miami, who are co-owned by David Beckham, for the youngster's services. Bees boss Thomas Frank has previously called his newest signing a "very good player" and insisted their interest has little to do with his "name".

Beckham said he was "very proud" to be a Brentford player when he first made the switch from Miami to London in January. After the 2022 Major League Soccer (MLS) season came to an end, he was invited to train with Brentford's 'B' team to maintain his fitness.

Brentford chiefs clearly liked what they saw and signed him on loan for the rest of the 2022-23 campaign. It now appears he will make that switch permanent, giving him the opportunity to prove he has what it takes to succeed in English football.

Beckham's dad was one of the greatest players of his generation, winning six Premier League titles and the Champions League - among other things - with Man Utd. He also played for the likes of Real Madrid, AC Milan, Paris Saint-Germain and LA Galaxy.

The emerging Beckham left Arsenal's academy in 2015 and not much was heard about his footballing aspirations until he joined Miami in 2021. That move was hardly a ringing endorsement of his talent, considering his dad co-owns the club.

Beckham spent the 2022 campaign playing in the MLS Next Pro, a reserve league, where he scored two goals and provided 10 assists in 20 appearances. The youngster is a winger - just like his dad was all those years ago.

Beckham hit the headlines in February after scoring a late winner for Brentford in their Middlesex Senior Challenge Cup clash against Wealdstone. He then played a role in the reserve team winning the Premier League Cup, beating Blackburn 2-1 in the final.

Speaking in April, Brentford's director of football Phil Giles insisted Beckham's loan transfer wasn't a "PR stunt" and called him a "humble guy". He also praised his "good work ethic" and "good mindset", with the player doing extra hours on the training ground.

Frank has also said: "Romeo is a very good player, of course he has a name that is pretty worldwide. For Romeo, he is himself, but he of course has a big name."

Frank added: "He is here for a reason, because we think he is a good player, and we are pleased he could make the loan deal. [We are] pleased to see him doing well, pleased to see the performance he had in the last game."
