Rome Flynn Exits 'Chicago Fire' After Emotional Storyline Arc

Chicago Fire season 12

Another firefighter has exited the cast of 'Chicago Fire.' Rome Flynn, who played Jake Gibson on the NBC series, bid farewell during the episode that aired on March 27. Following his final appearance, Flynn shared a post on Instagram acknowledging his departure. In the episode, Gibson struggled with prescription drug withdrawals, leading to a breakdown where he confided in Stella (Miranda Rae Mayo) about the need for treatment and his decision to leave. While Variety confirms his exit from the show, the possibility of his return in the future remains uncertain.

At the start of the season, showrunner Andrea Newman expressed excitement about Flynn joining the ensemble, describing him as a dynamic presence with a unique energy that would shake things up at Firehouse 51. Newman hinted at the complexity of Gibson's character, suggesting that there are layers to explore, making him a compelling addition to the series.

Recent departures from the show include Kara Killmer, who concluded her role as Sylvie Brett in the February 28 episode after 199 appearances. Sylvie left Chicago to start a new life with Matt Casey (Jesse Spencer) in Portland, Oregon. Additionally, Alberto Rosende's character, Gallo, exited early in the season, relocating to Michigan to be closer to his family after a brief appearance in the premiere.

Newman reflected on Rosende's departure, emphasizing the impact of his character's evolution and the void left by his absence. She noted that while it was sad to bid farewell to Gallo from a writing perspective, his exit felt organic given the character's narrative arc.

This season marks Newman's solo tenure as showrunner following co-creator Derek Haas' departure after Season 11. The return of Taylor Kinney, who took a hiatus last season due to personal reasons, adds to the series' evolving dynamics. 'Chicago Fire' is a production of Universal Television in collaboration with Wolf Entertainment.
