Romanian prosecutors have initiated a criminal investigation against a far-right populist following allegations of election campaign funding abuses and support for extremist groups. The individual in question, who won the first round of a presidential election last year before it was canceled, was detained for questioning after being stopped by police in Bucharest.
The investigation includes accusations of incitement to actions against the constitutional order, spreading false information, and false declarations related to electoral campaign financing and asset disclosures. The Constitutional Court's decision to annul the election came after the individual's unexpected first-round victory, during which he claimed zero campaign spending.
Additional allegations involve the founding or supporting of fascist, racist, xenophobic, or anti-Semitic organizations, as well as promoting extremist ideologies. Despite denying any wrongdoing, the individual accused authorities of fabricating evidence to impede his candidacy for the presidency.
Supporters gathered outside the prosecutor's office, demanding the release of the individual and expressing their backing for his presidential bid. Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu emphasized the importance of upholding the law impartially, regardless of the individuals involved.

Protests in support of the individual have taken place in Bucharest, with claims that the election cancellation was unlawful. The rerun of the election is scheduled for May, with uncertainties surrounding the individual's eligibility to participate.
Police conducted searches in multiple counties linked to the individual's associates, uncovering allegations of false statements regarding campaign financing, illegal possession of weapons, and involvement in organizations with extremist tendencies.
The individual has previously courted controversy by praising historical fascist figures and expressing admiration for Russian President Vladimir Putin. Criticism from the Trump administration and allegations of external pressure have further complicated the situation.
