Roman Kemp says he took 'an absolute hammering' over disastrous One Show appearance

Roman Kemp has admitted he took 'an absolute hammering on Twitter' on Wednesday night, following a disastrous appearance on The One Show.

The former I'm A Celebrity...Get Me Out of Here! star, 29, has explained how misreading his emails led to him appearing on the BBC show in an ill-fitting suit from Buckingham Palace’s lost property box and "skew-whiff hair like Boris Johnson ".

Roman admitted that he had turned up to the Palace wearing a tracksuit, mistakenly thinking he was heading to a TV studio for hair and make-up.

Speaking on Capital Breakfast on Thursday morning, the radio presenter confessed he wanted to clear things up, because in his own words, he "took an absolute hammering on Twitter ".

"Please someone tell @romankemp needs to wear a tie with that shirt and suit. You're in the Palace for gods sake not a bleedin fashion parade or night club #Respect," one angry viewer tweeted after The One Show aired on Wednesday night.

Another savage post read: "Why would you let your nana do your hair with a food blender just before you went to the palace? #romankemp."

Chatting on the station flagship radio show, Roman went on to recall the mix-up that led to him appearing on TV looking slightly disheveled.

"I thought I was just going down to The One Show and I was just gonna say, you know, 'we're doing this, and the ballot’s going to be open and you can get your tickets' and all those types of things," he told his listeners on Thursday morning.

Roman explained the mishap on his popular radio show (ITV)

"All of a sudden they sent me a taxi. I get in the taxi. I knew I was playing football last night as well, after The One Show, so I had to take my football boots in a bag, my football kit, shin pads are in there, the lot, right?

He continued to explain that he tuned up without doing any hair or make-up, believing he was heading to a TV studio where they provide those service for you.

"So I get in this taxi, all of a sudden, it starts taking a few turns that I don't quite recognise," he recalled live on-air.

"And we’re not headed to The One Show at all because I've arrived at Buckingham Palace!"

Roman goes on to explain how he was greeted by "four, five heavily armed guards" asking for identification, as he was wearing a tracksuit.

"I find some ID on my phone and all these types of things. I make my way in to the Palace. I'm still in a tracksuit, I’ve still got my football boots in my bag…" he continued to tell his shock co-star Sian Welby.

"I've got no make-up on, my hair’s skew-whiff, I look like Boris Johnson… I get in there and they go 'oh, well, we've got to give you a suit!' So now I have to get the lost property suit that doesn't have a tie!

"So I thought, I’ve gotta be edgy with it, I’ve gotta do to the buttons up to the top and all this type of stuff to look a bit edgy. And, no joke, 20 minutes earlier, I'm packing my stuff to go and play football thinking 'I'm just popping out, just gonna do a bit of work, and then I'm on my way.' Twenty minutes later, I'm walking down the corridor of the Queen's bedroom!"

Roman then went on to discuss the feedback he received online after his mishap-riddled TV appearance.

"I took an absolute hammering last night on Twitter because people are saying ‘What is he doing on TV?! Oh God! Why is Martin Kemp spotty son all over my TV!’

"Not wearing a tie! And look at his tie, it looks like a comb over!" Roman added, as the studio burst into laughter.

During his appearance on The One Show on Wednesday night, the radio presenter announced that George Ezra will perform at the Platinum Party At The Palace celebrating the Queen’s 70-year Jubilee.

The Budapest singer, 28, is the first act to be confirmed for the live concert on June 4, which celebrates the United Kingdom’s longest serving monarch.
