Roman Abramovich must break his golden Chelsea rule to realise Thomas Tuchel trajectory

Chelsea dropped points again on Tuesday evening as they drew 1-1 against Brighton. They now sit third, 12 points away from league leaders Manchester City.

The club dramatically lost the league lead and have continued a slump down the league with unflattering scorelines. That puts immediate pressure on Thomas Tuchel. Naturally, more so as he’s a Chelsea manager.

On an episode of the CarefreeChelsea Back Page show football.london’s Chelsea writer Adam Newson was made it clear that Thomas Tuchel wouldn’t be treated any differently to previous Chelsea managers if results didn’t go to plan.

But, Tuchel is changing the culture at Chelsea and the way in which we view the managerial role at the club. In the Roman Abramovich era, the merry-go-round has seen several managers come and go through Stamford Bridge’s doors.

But, perhaps it's time to change his golden rule in a bid to get silverware and success at any cost and implement the longevity that fans crave, and they frankly need to replicate like other clubs. Just look at Arsenal or Brighton, for that matter at the moment.

Speaking after the draw Joe Cole on BT Sport was glad that Tuchel is at the helm in a tricky period for the club, "You couldn't have a better man in charge to steer the ship through the choppy waters at the moment.

"He's always spot on whenever he talks. He doesn't mind if you don't celebrate. But he understands."

There are plenty of reasons why the FIFA best men's coach for 2021 should stick around longer to build a team and his own legacy with the Blues. For one, he is calm and collected.

Even when things aren't going right, he says the right things and has a clear head about it all. Just take the game against Brighton. He had to contest with questions about Ziyech's celebration, Lukaku and Ziyech's half-time discussion, and their draw after the game.

But he did so in an understanding way, and his response was strong and clear. It's like he's keeping the band together by looking forward, letting the past be in the past.

He's also got a long-term vision and transformed the play style that he inherited from Frank Lampard when he first came in. The only thing he needs now is the board's support to make the signing that he needs to build his team.

Large parts of the team contain players that he may not have wanted. But, he is doing his best whilst keeping the camp as happy as possible. At the beginning of the season, this came with rotation.

But, injuries have forced the German with fewer options than usual. So, it will be interesting to see if the signing matches Tuchel's philosophy or, in true Chelsea fashion, they go with what players they think are right.

Lastly, he’s done something few managers have managed by finding a good balance between young academy players in the team and combining it with experienced mainstays in the side.

I hope his faith in the youth system and integrating players continues as it’s something fans have been asking for and wanting to see for a long time. It started with Frank Lampard giving many their debut’s to be fair.

But, Thomas Tuchel has kept that going to the surprise of many, and it’s been good to see. Chelsea shouldn’t let this blip, albeit now a significant blip in the season to deter them from the Tuchel way.

Stick with him long-term, giving the German a chance to instil the philosophy and team. Don’t revert to the revolving door of managers and destabilise a project that is in the works here.
