Roman Abramovich has been officially added to the UK sanctions list, causing a huge amount of uncertainty at Chelsea.
The Government’s decision to sanction the Russian oligarch for his alleged links to president Vladimir Putin has wrecked his plans to quickly sell the club.
Chelsea will continue to operate under a special license that will allow fixtures to be fulfilled and staff and players to be paid, with no new tickets permitted to be sold and the club shop closed.
However, the license does not permit the sale of the club, with Abramovich having announced his intention to end his near 20-year reign at Stamford Bridge last week.
Plenty of contenders had emerged in the race to buy Chelsea over recent days, with a deadline of March 15 set for serious bids.
The Government would consider an application for a licence to allow the sale of the club, but for now that prospect is on hold.
