Roman Abramovich has 1,063 people who can buy Chelsea Football Club amid £3bn asking price

Roman Abramovich is going to find it difficult to sell Chelsea for his current £3billion asking price and there are only 1,063 people in the world rich enough to pay that amount.

With the UK government under pressure to sanction the billionaire following Russia's invasion of Ukraine, the Russian oligarch is looking to end his tenure as the Blues' owner.

In a statement on Wednesday night, he confirmed that he was looking to sell the club after days of speculation.

"I have always taken decisions with the club’s best interest at heart," he said.

"In the current situation, I have therefore taken the decision to sell the club, as I believe this is in the best interest of the club, the fans, the employees, as well as the club’s sponsors and partners.

"The sale of the club will not be fast-tracked but will follow due process. I will not be asking for any loans to be repaid. This has never been about business nor money for me, but about pure passion for the game and club.

"Moreover, I have instructed my team to set up a charitable foundation where all net proceeds from the sale will be donated. The foundation will be for the benefit of all victims of the war in Ukraine.

"This includes providing critical funds towards the urgent and immediate needs of victims, as well as supporting the long-term work of recovery."

The question is, who can actually afford to buy the club for what Abramovich thinks it's worth?

Well, as per Forbes' most recent rich list, there are 1,063 billionaires in the world worth more than £3billion and therefore with the funds to pay outright.

That's not to say that any of those will be interested in taking over Chelsea, however. The asking price is a steep one, and it wouldn't be entirely surprising if Abramovich ends up lowering it.

Nevertheless, it does provide a slight insight to the fact that there's not many people around capable of taking over a club of the Blues' stature.
