My breakfast came unceremoniously piled into a takeaway box, it was a sorry sight.
I’d ordered the 'Mega English Breakfast' from Rollette Café in Meanwood Road as it seemed to be on the top of a lot people’s lists for a nice greasy fry-up. With a 4.4 star rating and more than 300 Google reviews, I thought I was in safe hands.
The mega meal included three rashers of bacon, three sausages, two eggs, three slices of toast, beans, mushrooms and tomatoes. I was feeling peckish so decided to add a couple hash browns and a slice of black pudding to my meal.

You can generally judge the quality of a breakfast via the standard of the sausages. These small fat wedges of sausage unfortunately were no good, they appeared manufactured and didn’t seem to have much of a discernible flavour - I could tell they were cheapest of store bought sausages.
The eggs on the other hand had been cooked to a decent standard, the yolk flowed when you pierced it with a knife. The hash browns appeared store bought, I could tell by the recognisable shape. These tasted reasonably adequate but there wasn’t anything particularly special about them.
The bacon, again, was serviceable with reasonably thick rashers. The mushrooms weren’t all too enjoyable, they tasted undercooked – although, I’d imagine there are many out there who prefer the texture a little more watery.
The serving of beans was generous – enough to layer on a couple slices of toast. They’d been flush with the toast, I was given three whole slices all buttered. It had all been packaged quite well, the toast separate from the other food so it had remained nice and crispy.
The fresh coconut milkshake was revitalising and certainly had chunks of the creamy and lactonic fruit piled into the bottom of my cup. It was a rather small serving and for £4.95, I couldn’t help feeling I’d been slightly short-changed.
The cinnamon roll on the other hand - I thought I'd ordered that at a complete steal for £1! Unfortunately, it was miniscule. There was no unexpected joy to be found in this meal.
Overall, if you’re hungry, either don’t have the ingredients at hand or just can’t be bothered making breakfast yourself (guilty) then Rollette Café will do the job – but you might end up feeling regret at the amount of money you’d spent on a not-so-special breakfast.
