Roger Federer set for London return after being named in Laver Cup side along with Rafael Nadal

Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal are set to join forces in London at the Laver Cup in September.

There have been doubts about Federer’s ability to resume top-flight tennis with the 20-time Grand Slam champion having already said that a return from his latest knee surgery looks highly unlikely in time for Wimbledon.

But Londoners will still be able to get a glimpse of the former No1 as the biggest draw with Nadal at tennis’ answer to the Ryder Cup at the O2 Arena from September 23-25.

“I’m really looking forward to getting back into competition later this year and the Laver Cup is very much part of my plan,” Federer said. “It’s no secret that I love the event and I’m super excited to be returning to the O2 and to London, one of the greatest cities in the world.”

For the O2, it is a first chance to showcase high-level tennis after it lost the right to host the end-of-year ATP Tour Finals to Turin from last season.

The star attraction would be the potential for Federer and Nadal to team up to play doubles for a Team Europe side captained by Bjorn Borg against Team World for the fifth edition of the event.

“Rafa is an incredible person and an inspiration to me and countless others around the world,” Federer said. “He messaged me on social media after the Laver Cup in Boston last year suggesting we play doubles in London and I am definitely up for a Laver Cup ‘Fedal’ comeback.”

The two had been paired just once previously in the doubles at the inaugural event in Prague back in 2017.

Hospitality packages will go on sale from Monday at LaverCup.com with other tickets on sale in early March.
