Rodrigo praises Leeds United summer activity as he outlines targets for new season

Leeds United forward Rodrigo Moreno has outlined the club’s targets for the new season and backed Marc Roca to shine. The Whites begin their Premier League campaign at home to Wolves today and will be hoping for a much more positive year than the last one.

Leeds secured survival by the skin of their teeth with a final day victory at Brentford in May and are eager to avoid a repeat of last season’s difficulties. Despite losing key players Raphinha and Kalvin Phillips, Leeds have strengthened the squad with seven new additions.

Midfielder Marc Roca is among those who have come in this summer, joining for a fee in the region of around £10 million. Fellow Spaniard Rodrigo is backing Roca to be a success at Elland Road after his positive performances in pre-season.

Via quotes from Marca, he said: “I feel he’s going to be important. He has shown that in pre-season. The club has strengthened well.

“Last year, with the injuries, the squad was short, and it was noticeable. We have to get back among the top clubs in the Premier League, which is difficult.”

Rodrigo was then quizzed on Leeds’ aspirations for the new season. The 31-year-old was quick to put a lid on expectations, simply stating the ‘most important thing’ is for the Whites to produce an improvement on last season.

He said: “We are already looking forward to the tournament. Our objective is to save ourselves. Last season was complicated in many ways, with situations that didn’t help, but we managed to save ourselves.

“We have lost Kalvin Phillips and Raphinha, but we have also signed some good players. It’s not the club’s goal [top six] this year. The short-term goal, despite the investments, is another one. The others have also strengthened a lot.

“The top 6/7 squads are very good, among the best in the world. The Premier League is making a difference with the rest.

“Not only those 6/7 but also Aston Villa, Leeds. West Ham… It’s difficult to get into the ‘Big 6’, but the important thing is to offer a better version than last season.”
