Rodrigo Bentancur: Tottenham midfielder 'conscious and talking' after horror head clash in Leicester draw

Ange Postecoglou has confirmed that Rodrigo Bentancur was up, conscious and talking in the Tottenham changing room after a scary injury suffered against Leicester.

Monday night’s Premier League fixture at the King Power Stadium was delayed by eight minutes late in the second half as Spurs’ Uruguayan midfielder received lengthy treatment and oxygen on the pitch having hit the floor hard in worrying scenes after an accidental clash of heads with Abdul Fatawu at a Leicester corner.

The medical staff were quickly called on and a concerned hush fell around the ground as Bentancur was attended to.

Thankfully he was able to sit up and was eventually stretchered off to warm applause from around the stadium, with Tottenham sending on new signing Archie Gray as a concussion substitute.

Sky Sports reported towards the end of Monday’s 1-1 draw that Tottenham’s team doctor confirmed that Bentancur had been up and talking in the Spurs changing room.

That was subsequently confirmed by Tottenham boss Postecoglou, who told Sky Sports: “It’s a head injury so we’ve just got to be really careful.

“The good news is that he was up and talking, so we’ll let the medical team take charge of that.”

Asked again about Bentancur’s condition during his post-match press conference, Postecoglou said: “Look, I don't have a lot of information but I know he is up and he's communicating so he's fine from that point of view.

“But obviously it’s a head injury and I'll leave it in the hands of the medical team now. The key thing is that he's definitely conscious and communicating.”

On whether Bentancur had been knocked out during the incident, the Tottenham head coach added: “I don't know.

“Whenever it's a head injury and you see a player go down, I think nowadays we're always cautious in that moment and I don't know the actual circumstances but I know it was a head collision.”
