Rodrigo Bentancur opens up on joining Tottenham from Juventus and why Harry Kane 'surprised' him

Rodrigo Bentancur has revealed that he is ‘happy’ at Tottenham and believes that playing Premier League football is helping to develop his game further. The 24-year-old midfielder joined Spurs for an initial £15.8 million from Juventus in the January transfer window.

The Uruguayan failed to command a regular spot in the starting XI during his four-and-a-half seasons at Juve. However, Bentancur has seamlessly slipped into Spurs’ midfield and is already one of the first names on Antonio Conte’s team-sheet.

Bentancur has started seven of his eight top flight fixtures since arriving in north London; he simply didn’t enjoy that kind of consistency of selection during his spell with Juve. And the Spurs star revealed his delight at becoming an integral part of the team in such a short space of time.

“(I’m) very happy and getting minutes,” ESPN Argentina have reported him saying. “It’s the best league at the moment. I’m very happy to play for Tottenham in that league and to be taking this opportunity. (It) is going to help me a lot to keep improving.”

Bentancur played alongside a host of superstars at Juve including the likes of Paulo Dybala and Cristiano Ronaldo, and the Uruguayan revealed his delight at playing alongside Spurs’ biggest star in Harry Kane. The England captain is gradually getting back to his best after a slow start to the campaign.

Kane has scored 15 goals and notched a further five assists since Conte took the helm at Tottenham in November to fire the north London club back into contention for a top four finish. And Bentancur described playing alongside the Spurs striker as an ‘honour’.

When asked which of his teammates had most ‘surprised’ him, the Uruguay star chose Kane, saying: “Technically and physically, he is an incredible player, very complete; it is an honour and a pleasure to have him as a team-mate.”
