Rodrigo Bentancur has revealed he was "surprised" to hear of Tottenham's interest in signing him and didn't expect to join the club in January.
The 24-year-old left Juventus for north London in a £15.8million deal last month, alongside former Bianconeri team-mate Dejan Kulusevski who put pen to paper on an 18-month loan deal which could also become permanent.
Despite Spurs’ poor form over the last few weeks that has seen Antonio Conte’s side suffer four defeats in their last five Premier League games, Bentancur has impressed in the Lilywhites midfield and started in their last three top-flight fixtures.
However, the Uruguay international could be out of action for up to three weeks after picking up an injury during Wednesday's defeat at Burnley.
Speaking to Sky Sport Italia Bentancur clarified how his move to Spurs had unfolded.
He said: "I didn't expect to move in January, I found out in the national team, and I was very surprised and happy.
"I am doing fairly well, but still have to do so much more. My objective is to improve day by day, give my best, help my teammates and take this side to the top four for Champions League qualification."
Bentancur was also asked to compare his former boss at Juve, Massimiliano Allegri, with current manager Conte, and the Uruguay star revealed that they share certain character traits.
He added: "There are similarities, as both of them have only victory in their minds,
"Conte, as we saw with his reaction when we beat Manchester City: Conte lives football in the most incredible way and he transmits that passion to his players. I am very happy to be here working with him."
