Rodrigo Bentancur injury: Tottenham midfielder undergoes scans on ankle damage

Tottenham midfielder Rodrigo Bentancur will on Tuesday have the ankle injury picked up against Aston Villa assessed.

Bentancur was on Sunday handed his first start since overcoming the anterior cruciate ligament injury suffered in February, only to be forced off after 32 minutes.

The Uruguayan was clattered by a nasty challenge from Villa's Matty Cash and substituted soon after in discomfort.

Manager Ange Postecoglou said after the game: "It’s his ankle, I think. It wasn’t a great tackle. I thought he started the game so well. That’s the last thing we need — another injury. We’ve got eight [players injured], Bentancur nine. We lost Ashley Phillips in the week as well. It’s just the situation we’re in at the minute."

Postecoglou gave the first-team squad Monday off but Bentancur was back at Hotspur Way on Tuesday for a check-up, with Spurs hoping their injury crisis is not about to worsen ahead of the visit to Manchester City on Sunday.

James Maddison and Micky van de Ven are not expected back until the New Year, along with Ryan Sessegnon and Manor Solomon. Ivan Persic is not expected to play for the club again after suffering an ACL injury of his own.

Richarlison could be back before Christmas, along with young defender Ashley Phillips, while Cristian Romero will serve the final game of his three-match ban this weekend.

Yves Bissouma is available again after serving a ban of his own, while Pape Sarr will be monitored this week after sitting out the loss to Villa with a knock.
